How should we respond to and assist caring professionals who are at risk for or who have been secondarily traumatized?

I embrace a two-pronged approach which includes crisis intervention counseling and trauma prevention training.

Crisis Intervention Counseling
Crisis intervention counseling or group stress debriefings should be offered after staff are traumatized by a single event or series of events that undermine their ability to cope. In the case of individual consultations, most staff members are able to re-stabilize emotionally after 3 or 4 sessions unless an unresolved, underlying trauma has been triggered by the event. In the case of stress debriefings, occasionally a follow-up debriefing is requested.

Trauma Prevention Training
In order to inoculate themselves from the inevitable trauma they will encounter at work staff must be provided with trauma and prevention training. This training should be offered to all staff and on an ongoing basis. Training should also be offered to supervisors because they play a critical role in supporting and validating their staff which results in lower staff turnover.

If you are interested in talking with me about the possibility of providing a training please feel contact me at my new email address: david.conrad@childrenscolorado.org. I hope you have a great day! Best, David
